Board Etiquette - IMPORTANT PLEASE READ - MESSAGE FROM THE MODERATORS

Read all of this post please - apologies for its length:

With the New Year underway, on behalf of the webmaster and moderators, it is a good time to thank everyone for what has been a generally good humoured and productive year for the board.

However it is also time to remind everyone about "Board Etiquette" as unfortunately after a pretty quiet year, over the Festive Season the moderators have had received a number of complaints - not a trend we want to see continuing!

Why do we need good board etiquette?

Well, for two reasons primarily:

1. The board is the "shop window" for the HPEC and we want to ensure that it reflects the aims and objectives of the club. It should reflect that we are ENTHUSIASTS and our spirit is one of enthusiasm and support for those who share our interests. Since introducing the board HPEC membership has increased - we do want this trend to continue!

2. We want to keep the board. To do this we need to ensure that the risk of litigation against the club is minimised. This is a surprisingly litigious age and neither the club nor its committee have deep pockets so cannot expose themselves to risks of being sued (we have been threatened once already and don't need that again!). If concerns become too great the board will be closed.

What is good board etiquette?

Basically what you should type should be what you would be happy saying face to face to someone else, or more importantly what you would be happy having them say to you! Remember that the reader can't see your facial expressions so you need to be far more careful with how you express yourself in a post than you would be in conversation. What you think is "friendly banter" can be interpreted by others as insulting. Smilies help.

There is no reason why we should not have lively debates but where you have difference of opinion be polite. If you don't want to do this then there are other forums which will cater for your needs!

Remember that your posts are not only read by those for whom they are intended and not only just by members of this board. Think very carefully about who might be lurking before you finalise your comments.

The purpose of this message board is to provide a forum where those who are new to the breed, those who have just a few highlands and those whose lives have been filled with hundreds of hipos can feel free to share their experiences and ask for and receive advice in a friendly atmosphere and together celebrate successes no matter how big or small - be it a win at Olympia or your first solo hack after a crisis of confidence. No one should feel that they will be belittled or insulted and the moderators have agreed that we will not allow such behaviour which sadly has recently lead to the loss of a valued member.

New rule - "3 strikes and you're out"

We are afraid that after the recent spate of complaints the moderators have had agreed that going forwards if we receive 3 complaints about a member that member will receive a final warning. Any further complaint will result in that person's membership of the board being terminated at the discretion of the moderators. The moderators' decision will be final. If that person is a member of the HPEC then the relevant provisions in the club constitution will apply.

We apologise that this seems a rather negative message but it is important that you adhere to good board etiquette if this board is to continue.

Regards
Caroline
