Mood: Loving my lovely ponies

RIP Humphrey of Combebank

I am heartbroken to let people know that my lovely lad was put to sleep on Tuesday 8th January. He suffered renal failure as a consequence of gut and renal tumours. This all happened very quickly.
On Monday he seemed a little subdued but nothing to suggest we shouldn't hack out so Sarah and I took him and Maddy for a quiet walk around the fields on a beautifully sunny day. He had bad diarrhoea on the way back and then seemed unsteady so I got off and led him the last few hundred yards back and phoned the vet.
By Tuesday morning he was badly dehydrated and we took him to the vet practice where investigations established renal failure and the presence of malignant tumours. The decision made itself.
Our lovely vet explained what would happen and what decisions I had to make re method (I chose the injection) and disposal of the body. I then had time with Humph and could decide when to ask the vet to come back.
I asked if I could take him outside as he never liked to be inside and he enjoyed that; even managed a few mouthfuls before he went on his final journey.
The yard owner, my friend Eileen and the vet staff were so supportive - it was a calm and peaceful death.
Although I am desperately sad - he was 27 and had spent 24 of those years with me - I also feel very lucky to have known him and am incredibly touched by all the messages from the people who knew and loved him too.

Run free over Rainbow Bridge Humphrey, you were such a character and you gave so much, not only to you Rebecca, but to all the RDA riders who enjoyed their time with him and other folks who enjoyed their hacks & lessons with him. A very special pony :flowers::flowers::flowers:

I’m so sorry to read this and for you as I can only imagine how heartbroken you must be. He was such a character and although I never met him I feel I know a lot about him and your journey together. But lots of good times to remember and a peaceful end for him with you by his side.

Rebecca there are no words to describe how sorry I am to hear this. Over the years your stories of your boy have brightened my days. He was certainly a larger than life character and will inevitably leave a big hole in your heart.
