Islander would like you to know

Jean has asked me to let her many friends on here know that she lost her beautiful Amber last night.

"Lost my best friend of 21 years tonight. She said it was time and she was always wiser than me,xxxx"

I am sure many of us can relate to the way Jean is feeling at the moment.

A sad day but what a wonderful life she had. She and jean had a special relationship and took shared responsibility for the herd. Through her life I feel that jean showed us the true needs of a highland pony. I won't forget the ride I had on her and her taking me at speed down a steep bank...and surviving to tell the tale.... Or me losing my stirrup ( meaning my foot had come out) and Jean asking me which tree it was hanging on!

That is so terribly sad. Amber has been such a part of this board and quite a number of us have been to visit Jean on Mull and ridden her lovely ponies. Riding Amber was part of getting my confidence back; she has a special place in my heart.
Jean, loads of these for you and the grandchildren who must be missing her too.

This is one of the saddest posts I have read on this forum. I also had the priviledge of riding Jeans wonderful ponies. I miss her so much on here. My heart goes out to her and Camrie and weeBobby and her beloved family. She was a one in a million pony.

So sorry to read this. I have loved seeing the photos of Amber over the years - such a beautiful pony with a wonderful character. I wish I could have met her although I still feel I knew her and this has made me cry. My thoughts are with you Jean xx

How very sad. Was thinking about her only this morning.

Having a claymore pony myself of similar age and with sight problems we often talked about them and their quirks.

Rip Amber. Missed by the whole highland community xx

I am so very saddened to learn of the news of Amber`s death and cannot bear to think of the grief and heartache Jean must be feeling just now. Too many of us have been there not to know how dreadful this time is.

I was deeply privileged to meet and ride Amber on my trips to Mull to visit Jean. The first visit was when I was still recovering my confidence after breaking my leg following a riding accident. We had set out in a group with me riding Camrie and Jean on Amber. Part of the way round Jean announced that I should ride Amber, at least for a little while, then I could swap back to Camrie if I wished. I can still see the big stone we used as a mounting block. I was terrified of that little pony but oh my goodness, that girl taught me to ride! She taught me what it was to be as one with the pony and to just ride for the sheer enjoyment of it. From that point on we were inseparable and I never did ride Camrie again!

The most memorable ride was when Jean persuaded me to canter, a pace I avoided as that was when I fell off and broke my leg. Most of us who know Jean know how persuasive she can be so at a selected spot she announced that she would go in front on Camrie and lead in canter so that if I wanted to stop, she would be the brake. Off we set Camrie in front and Amber behind - absolutely furious! Those little hooves thundered behind the disappearing back of Camrie who, being in front, kicked up mud into our faces and splattered us with thick, clingy mud! When we finally (reluctantly) came to a stop, my face was caked in mud but I was beaming from ear to ear in sheer exhilaration and pure joy!

Amber will forever live on through the countless memories she gave to us and the stories we can all tell of the pluckiest, most feisty and determined little pony I ever had the privilege to meet. Somewhere up in the Highlands of Heaven Dudley and Amber can cavort and frolic and kick up their hooves and look down on us and turn our tears to laughter once more just because of how lovely and loved they were.

Bless you Jean and and thank you for sharing your beautiful Amber with so many of us.
