The tea tray idea

Rannoch and I went back to kindergarten in our lesson today to relearn the outside rein contact! I thought I did have an outside rein contact…in fact I was trying to ride Rannoch with an outside bend to get him into my outside rein…but it seems that he was simply pulling my outside shoulder forward more and more and drifting himself. In order to prove this to me my instructor had me go right back to a baby lesson of carrying my whip like a tea tray. If the whip started pointed backwards towards the inside hind I had to correct it by adjusting my upper body and getting my outside shoulder back. Really easy stuff but it made a heck of a difference when it came to riding down the centre line and doing a series of 10 metre circles back to the fence line. As he became straighter he started mouthing the bit and became much more forward. It was a timely reminder that what you think you are doing is not always what you are doing!
